چکیده

In this paper, we define a general service abstraction for a network element. The service abstraction is defined in terms of a “service mapping,” which is a montotone operator that maps an arrival process to a lower bound on the corresponding departure process. We consider service mappings which are shift invariant, which includes the previously studied service curve model defined in terms of convolution in the “min-plus” algebra. For a network element with a shift invariant service mapping, we obtain bounds on the maximum delay, maximum backlog, and a traffic envelope for the departure process, assuming that the arrival process to the network element conforms to a traffic envelope. These bounds have a unified graphical interpretation and reduce to previously known bounds in the case of a service curve model. Next, we apply the service mapping abstraction to a First-In First-Out (FIFO) multiplexer whose arrival processes conform to traffic envelopes. The corresponding service mapping is non-linear in the min-plus algebra. We note that the quality of service bounds reduce to previously known tight bounds. We then consider a tandem configuration of FIFO multiplexers. Analysis of the tandem network with the service mapping abstraction yields achievable upper bounds on end-to-end delay which are smaller than those that can be obtained with previously proposed methods.

Feature Extraction to Identify Network Traffic with Considering Packet Loss Effects

There are huge petitions of network traffic coming from various applications on Internet. In dealing with this volume of network traffic, network management plays a crucial rule. Traffic classification is a basic technique which is used by Internet service providers (ISP) to manage network resources and to guarantee Internet security. In addition, growing bandwidth usage, at one hand, and limit...

Modeling Service Applications for Optimal Parallel Embedding

Leveraging the traditional virtual network concept, some recent research works have proposed the Virtual Data Center (VDC) as an abstraction to capture both bandwidth and compute/storage resource requirements for an application. However a virtual node in a VDC is limited to a virtual machine (VM), which can only be embedded onto a single physical machine. This condition limits the applicability...

Communication-Aware Traffic Stream Optimization for Virtual Machine Placement in Cloud Datacenters with VL2 Topology

By pervasiveness of cloud computing, a colossal amount of applications from gigantic organizations increasingly tend to rely on cloud services. These demands caused a great number of applications in form of couple of virtual machines (VMs) requests to be executed on data centers’ servers. Some of applications are as big as not possible to be processed upon a single VM. Also, there exists severa...

Hierarchical Facility Location and Hub Network Problems: A literature review

In this paper, a complete review of published researches about hierarchical facility location and hub network problems is presented. Hierarchical network is a system where facilities with different service levels interact in a top-down way or vice versa. In Hierarchical systems, service levels are composed of different facilities. Published papers from (1970) to (2015) have been studied and a c...

System-Level Service Assurance — The H∀Mcast Approach to Global Multicast

The Internet revolution introduced a single, adaptive abstraction layer for global communication. Today, IP interconnects millions of applications, which themselves are bound to the present IP layer via the socket API. After almost 30 years, the time has come to abandon this focus on a single, homogeneously established Internet protocol and thereby release the accumulated needs for innovation o...
